The instrument is common in West Africa traditions, particularly in rural areas. It is used mainly during, celebrations, ceremonies, festivals, it is shaken and\/or hit against the hands to produce a unique sound for music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paulyne.wp-warriors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Shakere-small-2-e1661292916406-956x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Shakere Braids by Shani Crowe influenced by West African instrument\" class=\"wp-image-62422\"\/><figcaption>Shakere Braids by Shani Crowe influenced by West African instrument\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen in the image, the talented braid stylist <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/3arts.org\/artist\/shani-crowe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shani Crowe<\/a> produced this hairstyle on the young lady, which has been influenced by the Shekere instrument. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shani is an interdisciplinary artist from Chicago\u2019s south side. Some are the&nbsp;lilolo,&nbsp;axatse&nbsp;(Ghana),&nbsp; djabara&nbsp;(Guinea),&nbsp;ush\u00e0k\u00e0,&nbsp; chequere&nbsp; and&nbsp;saa saa&nbsp;(Liberia). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agbe is a gourd drum with cowrie shells and is usually strung with white cotton thread. The axatse is a small gourd, held by the neck and percussed between hand and leg.
