As an award-winning African American actress who has been captivating audiences for decades, Angela Bassett has become a true icon in Hollywood. Her incredible talent and range have earned her countless accolades, including Golden Globe<\/a> and Academy Award<\/a> nominations, while her remarkable achievements have cemented her position as a role model, not only for Black people but for women in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bassett’s impressive career began onstage in the mid-1980s, where her performances in August Wilson’s plays, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, showcased her talent and versatility. In 1991, she played a small but powerful role in John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood<\/a>, followed by her biggest role yet, starring opposite Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it was her portrayal of singer Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It that earned Bassett critical and popular acclaim. Her incredible performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
